Horse Transport

Equitran International Ltd. Ireland

The transport boxes

We operate a flexible fleet of horseboxes:

2 horse (rear facing)
4 horse (forward facing)
10 horse on air (herringbone)on air  (air condittioned)
11 horse on air (herringbone) on air
18 horse artic (herringbone) on air  (air conditioned)

All transporter boxes have adjustable partitions, non slip flooring and ramp covering, and interior lighting in horse area.  We use satellite navigation in all vehicles.

Air suspension makes a considerable difference to the comfort of the horses in transit.

Artic Transporter

The lockers are all underneath rather than slotted into the side of the body. This was done to allow the maximum amount of headroom in front of each horse. When horses are being fed/watered they are untied and able to eat from the ground. There are two other access doors in the side. We carry only best quality hayledge for fodder. If you wish your horse to travel with his own fodder we are happy to do this, but we will only feed soaked hay - so it helps if he is used to this. We do not feed grain feeds while travelling. In general the 18 horse is the main vehicle used for long distance travel. We find that horses travel best in the artic trailer because of the very smooth ride. There is always an element of "lean" in a rigid truck. We have tested the artic by carrying a full bucket of water to Germany - the bucket was still full when we arrived!

Watering

Each horse has its own bucket which clips in to the front of his stall for watering. We have found that many horses are very reluctant to drink if somebody is just holding a bucket in front of them. It is also possible to closely monitor the amount of water that is being consumed. There is a 200 gallon water tank on board - ensuring adequate water is always on tap

Extra Ventilation When Stationery

The 18 horse has a slide our side ramp as well as a rear ramp. We had this made for a purpose. Obviously we could not put windows into a standard ramp and we wanted to allow as much fresh air circulation as possible. The doors above this are gated, which, allows us to leave the side door open when the vehicle is stationary and especially when travelling on ferries. This ensures much better ventilation.

4 Horse Transporter

The four horse transporter has forward facing stalls with full height padded partitions. It is ideal for transporting mares and foals, or for transport to shows, vets etc. The two side loading ramps are very low - much more appealing for the difficult loader. Horses in the front compartment are totally seperate from those in the back. There are two side access doors and a grooms area in the vehicle. We also use this if a small number of horses have to arrive at their destination quickly. For example horses can be taken to the UK from Ireland on a "next day" basis, providing the Irish Sea allows us to travel!
